How the role of women has changed in the workplace and are we in a better place today?
We all have seen the numbers of women in the workplace increase hugely since they entered the economic system to supplement the male earning capacity. Complex social movements equal opportunities legislation, the expansion of the service sector and the knowledge economy, the ever increasing cost of living and increased access to education have contributed to this feminist movement.
This rise in numbers has resulted in women entering a much broader range of occupations, from apparel, teaching and nursing to every walk of occupational and professional life.
This difference in female employment patterns has had a significant impact on the economic empowerment of women more importantly providing wider contribution to macro value creation indices.
The skills and expertise of women are essential to economic recovery and growth. Optimising women's productivity, creativity and energy is a win-win game for enterprises, workers, governments and societies.
Women in work has definitely contributed towards the growth of global economy. If we take Sri Lanka, women represents the main work force in apparel, foreign employement and tea that are pillars in Sri Lankan economy. However, currently women representation in executive and managerial levels is comparatively low. But it's a upward trend we are seeing on these areas also.
ReplyDeleteWell said. However much women are involved in the work place there still remains some obstacles which women have to face in comparison to their counterparts.
ReplyDelete1) Maternity Leave and Leave thereon
Women are forced to split between their home and work while men have more opportunity to
focus more on work.
2) Leadership Roles
A lack of role models on leadership roles in the corporate culture provides a hesitation on
providing leadership to women.
3) Harassment
Despite of many acts being brought upon the matter, women still face harassment of all
kinds in workplaces.
4) Pay Differences
Despite of acts been imposed pay differences remain, where men tend to get paid more
for a job rather than women on the same job.
However despite these obstacles I think women are moving forward on employment aspects in a positive and steady manner and are in a much better place today than it used to be.
It is a good practice to have a good diversity balance in an organization. That way, organizations may benefit from a mix of unique skills and talents in their talent pool and also it will build a good corporate image where it shows how the organization provides equal opportunity to everyone regardless of gender.
